Façade and Landscaping Plans - October 2009 So near and yet so far! We’ve made some very exciting progress in the restoration of our historic library home at 356 Commercial Street. In 2007 we restored the bell and raised the belfry back into the Provincetown skyline. This year, we finished the restoration of the Lantern and Main Gable with the guidance and financial support of the Massassachusetts Historical Commission and private donors. Campbell Construction and John Bologna of Coastal Engineering completed the job in time and ON BUDGET! Now the 3rd floor ceiling leaks can be repaired and the upper building will be sealed to the elements. As you look up at that part of the Library now you have a much better idea of how graceful the completed façade will be. Let's Finish This Job! We still need to raise funds to complete the middle and (bottom) ground-level sections of the facade and phase two of the landscaping. The Board of Library Trustees recently voted to form an ad hoc committee to investigate a new strategy for finishing the entire Library Restoration project. A strategy will be developed to apply to the 2010 Annual Town Meeting for funding sufficient to finish the exterior of the building, the Lower Level, the landscaping and the redesign of our handicap access. In the meantime, we will continue to raise funds from Grants and private donations. The first phase of the landscaping, which should include the perimeter wall, grading and the final steps and railings, has been postponed until we can raise the funds to finish the job. If you would like to see the design plans done by Landscape Architect Martha Lyon click here or ask to view them at the Front Desk in the Library. An anonymous donor gave us a significant gift, covering phase one of this project, which will allow us to enhance our handicapped access to both entrances and to create outdoor reading areas. The Trustees are very serious about their responsibility for the long-term care of this beautiful building and recognize that additional funding is integral to completing the façade and front landscaping. They appreciate and welcome your support. |
