Provincetown Public Library Long Range Plan/Methodology

Fiscal Year 2001 has served as a transition year in the Library's planning process. While continuing to address the activities listed in the FY2001 action plan, the Library Trustees, Staff and Committee members have also prepared this new plan. For this reason, the FY2001 action plan is included in this document. The following is a brief chronology of the significant planning activities and highlights of the process. Full documentation is on file at the Library.

Library Director, Debra DeJonker-Berry and Committee Chair, Arthur Pike prepared for the upcoming Planning Process by reading Planning for Results; compiling statistics and facts about the Library; registering for the Southeastern Massachusetts Library System (SEMLS) Planning Workshop series; reviewing the results of two telephone surveys done in the fall of 1999 and 2000 through a LSTA-funded Customer Service Grant; and reviewing the information available on Community Visioning previously prepared by the Town of Provincetown. The Committee was very lucky to have the 1997 Local Comprehensive Plan and the 1995 Community Vision Project: Survey and Workshop Results. These documents were gold mines of information on visioning and community priorities.

Arthur Pike convened the first meeting of the Planning Committee on January 3, 2001 using Planning for Results (Himmel, Wilson, et al; American Library Association, 1998) as the guide for the planning process. At this meeting, the Chairman reviewed the planning process, outlined the preliminary steps, background, time-table and budget. The Town's Visioning Statements, the information gathering stages and SWOT analyses were reviewed. The Committee left the meeting with the assignment of reading the Guidebook, filling out the SWOT analysis and organizing their ideas for the Vision Statement.
