Provincetown Public Library Long Range Plan/Methodology(Cont.)
On January 11, 2001, Cheryl Bryan led the participants in a Provincetown Community Forum through the Visioning Process and the SWOT analysis. The group of thirty-seven community members left with a sound list of the Library's Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, and a prioritized list of Service Responses. The chosen service roles were: the Commons Environment, General Information, Lifelong Learning, and Current Topics and Titles. Several members of the Forum asked that a customized service response, which cherishes learning and provides resources for children, be added.
On February 27, 2001, the Library Director and Planning Committee Chair met with the Library Staff to review the SWOT analysis and choice of service roles. Library Staff used the Needs Decision Tree and the Service Response Decision Tree. The Staff accepted the work done at the Forum and added the Local History/Genealogy and Cultural Awareness service role because no other group in the community besides he Library could be identified as serving that role. On March 22, the Planning Committee met again and reviewed the work done so far. The Committee then worked on a new Mission Statement for the Library. After this meeting, the burden of work switched to the Library Staff who began to develop a set of Goals based on the Mission Statement and choice of Service roles. As this work progressed, the Library Director met with the Library Trustees to check with them on the direction in which the Plan was heading. At regular intervals, the Trustees adopted segments of the Plan including the Mission Statement and Set of Goals. On July 18, 2001, the Library Director presented the final Plan to the Library Trustees for their approval, and on August 28, 2001 the entire Plan was reviewed by the Planning Committee and then unveiled to the Community.
